Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a procedure that involves placing sperm directly into the uterus to increase the chances of fertilization. It is a common form of assisted reproductive technology and is often used to overcome certain fertility issues. Here's an overview of the process:
Ovulation induction: Before IUI, some women may undergo ovarian stimulation, which involves taking fertility medications to stimulate the development of multiple eggs in the ovaries. This is done to increase the chances of successful fertilization.
Sperm preparation: On the day of the IUI procedure, a semen sample is collected from the male partner or a sperm donor. The sample is then processed in the laboratory to separate the sperm from other fluids and prepare a concentrated and motile sperm sample.
Insemination: The prepared sperm is placed into a thin, flexible catheter. The healthcare provider inserts the catheter through the cervix and into the uterus, where the sperm is deposited. The procedure is usually quick and relatively painless, similar to a pelvic exam.
Post-procedure: After the insemination, you may be advised to rest for a short time before resuming normal activities. Some women may experience mild cramping or spotting, but these side effects are usually temporary.
Follow-up: Approximately two weeks after the IUI, a pregnancy test is performed to determine if the procedure was successful. If the test is positive, further prenatal care will be provided. If the test is negative, your healthcare provider will discuss further steps and possible alternative treatment options.
IUI is often recommended for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, cervical factor infertility, or when using donor sperm. The success rates of IUI can vary depending on various factors, such as the woman's age, the cause of infertility, and the number of cycles attempted.
